I only ran once last week. I wasn’t feeling great all week – women’s troubles as we’d say. The weather wasn’t great either, so I was happy not to run.
However I had signed up for a virtual 5 mile run to be done this weekend. To be honest, I was nearly going to skip it: it was cold and wet and who cares if I don’t do it? However I don’t like not doing things I’ve signed up for, and the rain probably meant that the Covid walkers would not be out. It was the prospect of quiet streets that got me out the door. And I was so glad I went. Though it rained, my route meant that the wind wasn’t blowing in my face most of the time, and I felt like I was the only person alive! I met only a handful of people: I ran a stretch of over three miles and passed one person. These days my runs are all about avoiding pedestrians, so it was very liberating not to have to worry about other people.
Plus, I was thinking: what the hell else am I going to do this weekend? Why am I in a hurry to get home? The days are all pretty much the same these times, so getting out for a run on quiet streets was a massive treat.
So everyone is glad to see the back of January 2021. There’s still a lot of uncertainty and lockdown in our future, but at least we have the prospect of spring.
